2017 Upgrade for the
Christmas Tree Flat Car

Here are a few quick cell phone snaps of my latest project.

For the last few years there has been an ugly leash tying this 4 wheel LGB flat car to the dining car, where a giant plastic box holding some AAs blocked the aisle.

It worked, as you can see in these first two photos, but accessing the switch was awkward and, despite being hidden in these images, the cord was ugly.

Yes, it was calling out for some fixing.

Jump forward to 2017, and I have finally cut the cord.

The power is now contained on the flat, but this meant hiding the battery box. It was rather bulky, even after losing its lid, hinges and latch moldings. After gluing it in place, I covered it with some scrap pine, laser cut some masking tape stencils, gave a quick spritz of flat black spray paint, and finished with a couple of washes made with a weak mix of leather dye and alcohol.

This next image shows the mixed train running this year.

As you can see, Max (the Grinch's dog) is enjoying the open gondola, followed by the refurbed flat.

The final crate measures approximately 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 x 3/4 in. The black dot on the crate above "THIS" is the LED switch.
